My Thoughts:

The latest movie in the Love Comes Softly series is a bit of a twist in plot line. ?In previous movies, it was often the husbands that passed away, leaving the women to raise the children and take care of the homestead. ? The wife/mom passes away in this movie, so if you're looking for a film that doesn't make your mom cry, you might want to save watching this for the day after Mother's Day.

Even though I knew the plot ahead of time from reading the books and seeing the previous films, it still made me feel empathy for the characters. (The story of Clark and Ellen is a prequel to the first movie, Love Comes Softly, so if you like sequencing, you might want to start with Love Begins and work your way forward) ?The acting was very compelling and it showed how family leans on each other's strength in the midst of tragedy. ? Just because it's a great gift for mom doesn't mean that it's not a film for the whole family. ?Even my husband enjoys watching this with me. ?It has great family values and messages.

Disillusionment of an Entrepreneur

Lopez_4When I became an entrepreneur at the age of twenty-three, I began in earnest, as do all entrepreneurs, chasing a dream. My dream was clear. I would build a consumer technology company that reached ten million people and sell the company for millions of dollars, before the age of thirty. Then, as the dream went, I would retire to an oceanfront house on a warm Pacific beach and learn how to surf. I recently had the fortune of celebrating a year in which I saw that lofty goal fulfilled. My company?s iPhone apps had over ten million downloads, and a competitor paid a large sum of money to acquire what we had built, just a week before my thirtieth birthday. Dream had become reality.

Patients find "cloud" technology a faster, more efficient way to store and distribute their medical images than current options, according to the preliminary findings of an image sharing project led by The Mount Sinai Medical Center in conjunction with four other academic medical institutions. The Phase I results of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) Image Share project are being presented today at the American Roentgen Ray Society Annual Meeting in Vancouver, Canada.

Mount Sinai was the first site to go live in August 2011 and currently has about 190 patients enrolled in project. A total of about 600 patients are participating in all sites, which also include University of California - San Francisco, University of Chicago Medical Center, Mayo Clinic, and the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.

"Cloud" computing involves using a network of remote servers hosted on the Internet to store, manage, and process data, rather than a local server or a personal computer.

"This is the next revolution in digital imaging," said David Mendelson, MD, FACR, Chief of Clinical Informatics at The Mount Sinai Medical Center and Chief Clinical Investigator for RSNA Image Share. "It gives the patient ownership over their records and makes the information more accessible to physicians. Plus it decreases unnecessary radiation exposure that can be caused by physicians ordering duplicate examinations due to records not being easily available."

To use RSNA Image Share, patients create an account and password and then are given access to import their images and reports into the personal health record account. For patient confidentiality and security reasons, when the information leaves the server at each local radiology site and goes outside a hospital's firewall, it remains encrypted until it arrives in the patient's account, where it's unencrypted so the patient can see it.

"We're dealing with sensitive health information, so creating a secure and confidential system is of the utmost importance," said Dr. Mendelson. "But if you look at online banking or shopping, which both transport sensitive financial information; we know creating a secure, widely used system is an attainable goal."

In phase two of the trial, patients will be allowed to share their images without the images first being uploaded to an Internet-based personal health record. This should be useful in the event of severe acute trauma, with transfer to a trauma center. In phase three, the data will be de-identified and then made available for clinical trials.

Canada's Labour Minister Marks National Day of Mourning

OAKVILLE, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 04/28/12 -- Today, the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Canada's Labour Minister, participated in a commemorative ceremony at the Oakville Public Library, hosted by Oakville district labour council, to mark the National Day of Mourning.

"I would like to extend my sympathies to all Canadians who have lost loved ones to workplace fatalities. No words or action can take away their sorrow," said Minister Raitt. "The National Day of Mourning reminds us that, despite all efforts made to help improve safety in the workplace, more work needs to be done."

The Government of Canada is committed to promoting fair, safe and healthy workplaces. This is done by working closely with employers and unions to raise awareness in preventing work-related accidents and diseases, by educating them and by informing them about workplace safety.

On this day each year, the Canadian flag is flown at half-mast on Parliament Hill to pay tribute to the men and women who have been killed or injured on the job. Workers across the country observe this day in different ways, including lighting candles and observing moments of silence.

The Labour Program develops, administers and enforces workplace legislation and regulations, including the Canada Labour Code, which covers industrial relations, health and safety and employment standards, and the Employment Equity Act. These laws cover federally regulated workers and employers.

As Japan strains to care for elderly, sacrifices just begin

NISHINOMIYA, Japan - The ominous demographics of this aging nation have long been seen by Japanese as a distant concern, not a present-day one. But that mind-set is being called into question by a prime minister who says that a crisis requiring immediate sacrifices has already begun.

In recent months, Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda has staked his job and bet his support on a tax increase designed to fund Japan's soaring social security costs.

And the potential tax hike is only a sneak preview of the burdens to come as Japan grows into the world's grayest society, a nation where in two decades seniors will outnumber children 15 to 1 and younger people nearly 4 to 1.

Economists and government officials say that Japan, in the coming years, will probably raise the retirement age, again increase taxes and trim spending on everything from education to defense, all to care for its elderly.

Young Japanese - those entering the workforce amid two decades of stagnation - will face the greatest burden: They will earn less in real terms than their parents, pay higher pension premiums, receive fewer social services and, eventually, retire with a less-generous pension package.

And that's the best-case scenario, experts say, possible only if a notoriously fractious government succeeds in pushing through a series of unpopular measures.

Decades of good policy "can avoid a crisis," said Masatoshi Katagiri, an economist at Chuo University, but living standards will erode.

"Either way," he said, "it will be gloomy."

As it rose to become an economic power after World War II, Japan created a generous social security net, with a universal pension system, in which people were covered as employees or via a basic national program, and a universal health-care system. But since the collapse two decades ago of the real estate and stock market bubble, the foundation of that system has started to crack. Tax revenue has dropped amid deflation, forcing Japan, already the world's most debt-burdened country, to fund its social programs with more and more borrowing.

Meanwhile, Japan must come up with more and more money. This year, Japan will devote about 29 percent of its 90 trillion yen ($1.12 trillion) budget toward social security, its greatest single expenditure. Every passing year, according to government projections, Japan will need to raise an additional 1 trillion yen as it becomes the world's most top-heavy society.

"The ground on which social security stands is now shaking," Noda said at a town meeting in Nishinomiya this month.

Speaking to an audience of 200, Noda said Japan needs to double its consumption tax rate by 2015, a move that critics say could stall a tenuous economic recovery.

Noda said that in 1965, Japan had 9.1 workers for every retiree. By 2050, though, two in every five Japanese will be 65 or older. The country will have one worker for every retiree.

"It becomes really tough for the person at the bottom," Noda said.

Japanese have long avoided major social reforms, reluctant to mess with a system that they credit for their health. (Japanese life expectancy at birth is 83, the highest in the industrialized world, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.)

Modest changes came in 2004, when the government nudged up premium rates for its employee and national pension programs. But experts say that more - much more - should have been done.

At that time, Japanese policymakers came up with an idea to keep pension benefits from getting out of hand. They drew up a formula that essentially connected workforce size with pension payments to retirees. As one shrank, so, too, would the other, keeping the system sustainable as the population aged.

But the formula had a catch. It would be triggered only by an economic benchmark that required inflation. Years of subsequent deflation have prevented Japan from meeting that benchmark.

As a result, the formula has never been activated.

"We should have already been seeing this downward adjustment" for years, said Noriyuki Takayama, an expert at the Tokyo-based Research Institute for Policies on Pension and Aging. "So we have this aging population, and we still have no good answer on how to deal with it."

In Nishinomiya, Noda made his 20-minute case that a tax increase was the first step to confront the problem. He said the country is "at a crossroads." And then he opened the floor for questions.

A 20-year-old college student, Naoki Kakuta, raised his hand and asked whether there would be ways to reduce the burden on his generation.

Noda answered that it would be unfair to "forever" raise the pension premium, because the burden should be shared, not channeled toward those with jobs.

But the answer didn't quell Kakuta's concerns.

Kakuta said he didn't think the cutbacks to the current system were coming fast enough. And he doubted the ability of Japanese politicians to draft the right policies.

"To me," he said, "it sounds more and more like we're passing this on to the younger people. . . . I feel especially bad for the generation after mine. And that certainly doesn't motivate me to have more children."

Canon imageClass D1350

As the middle model in Canon?s D1300 series, the Canon imageClass D1350 ($599 direct) adds fax capabilities to the Canon imageClass D1320 ($499 direct, 3.5 stars). It?s a solid monochrome laser multifunction printer (MFP) geared to small offices, and in that role it provides good paper capacity, respectable speed, and acceptable output quality, if you?re not too picky about graphics. It lacks some extras that come with the Canon imageClass D1370 ($799 direct, 4 stars): PCL and PostScript drivers, secure printing, and the ability to scan to e-mail or a network drive, as well as to route incoming faxes to those locations.

The D1350 can print, copy, scan, and fax (including from your computer, PC-Fax); and print from or scan to a USB key. The white D1350 measures 18.4 by 17.8 by 18.6 inches (HWD)?large enough that you wouldn?t want to share a desk with it?and weighs 45 pounds.

On top of the D1350 is a 50-sheet duplexing automatic document feeder (ADF), which lets you scan, copy, or fax two-sided documents without having to feed the sheets one at a time. The ADF swings up to reveal the scanner?s legal-sized platen. Beside the output tray is a port for a USB thumb drive, which you can print from or scan to. Above the output tray is the front panel (more of a ?top panel? in this case, as it faces nearly upward); a 5-line monochrome display, a four-way controller, an alphanumeric keypad, and a modest set of function buttons.?

The D1350 has a standard 550-sheet paper capacity, split between a 500-sheet main tray and a 50-sheet feeder. An automatic duplexer, for printing on both sides of a sheet of paper, is standard. (As with other recent Canon printers, the D1350 ships with duplex printing as the default. An additional 500-sheet tray ($200 street) is available as an option, for a maximum paper capacity of 1,050 sheets. The D1350 can connect to a PC via USB cable, or to a local-area network via Ethernet. I tested it over an Ethernet connection using a PC running Windows Vista.

Canon imageClass D1350

Print Speed

Our standard procedure for testing business printing speed is to test using the printer?s default settings. Canon is perhaps the only printer manufacturer that makes duplexing (double-sided printing) the default on most of its recent printers. Thus, we tested the D1350 in duplex mode, which tends to be slightly slower than simplex (one-sided) printing.

On the new version of our business applications suite (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing), I timed the D1350 at an effective 8.9 pages per minute (ppm), a good speed for its 35 ppm engine rating (for printing text documents without graphics or photos), especially considering it was printing in duplex. It slightly lagged both the D1370 (9.8 ppm) and the D1320 (9.5 ppm). The Editors? Choice Brother MFC-8480DN ($400 street, 4 stars) tested at 10.6 ppm for simplex (one-sided) printing on the same tests.

Output Quality

Output quality was essentially the same as the other two D1300 models: slightly sub-par text, below-par graphics, and typical mono laser photo quality Text quality was slightly below par for a mono laser, which is still very good: fine for standard business uses, though not good enough for applications using very small fonts, such as desktop publishing.

Graphics quality was below average for a mono laser, okay for most internal business uses, but I wouldn?t want to give them to clients I was seeking to impress. All of the illustrations showed dithering (dot patterns). Certain graphics with black backgrounds appeared slightly blotchy. One printout that should have shown a gradient between dark and light zones printed out as uniformly dark.

One test illustration is a graph consisting of colored lines, some of them very thin, against a black background. All those lines should show up as white when printed out on a monochrome printer, but the thinner ones were totally lost. (When I printed out the test suite on the D1370 using its PCL and PostScript drivers, the lines showed up as they should, though they were invisible in the output from that printer?s default driver. Otherwise, there was very little difference between the output from the Canon D1320, D1350, and Canon D1570.)

Photo quality was typical of a mono laser, good enough to be able to print out recognizable images from files or Web pages. All of the prints showed dithering (dot patterns). Another problem I noticed was aliasing, the tendency for straight lines to appear sawtoothed or jagged. Detail in dark areas showed up reasonably well, though bright areas tended to look washed out.

Other Issues

The D1350 has relatively high running costs for a mono laser, at 3.3 cents per page. This is true of the other D1300 series models as well.

The D1350 lacks some of the bells and whistles of the D1370, such as secure printing, additional scanning and faxing capabilities, and the extra drivers. It has a lower price tag, so if you don?t need those features (and don?t think you will in the future), you might as well save the money. Speaking of saving money, if you don?t need fax capabilities on your MFP, you can have the D1320 for $100 less.

The D1350 has greater paper capacity than the Editors? Choice Brother MFC-8480DN, but its sticker price is higher, and the Brother 8480DN has lower running costs?the more you print, the more you?ll save?and better graphics quality. Still, the Canon imageClass D1350 is a perfectly reasonable choice, and worth consideration if you?re looking for a small-office MFP with solid speed and a good feature set.

Generally speaking, pests are pests - Is Rodent Control Even ...

Generally speaking, pests are pests, but some pests, such as mice and rats, are often far more destructive and unhealthy to humans than, say, ants or roaches. When homes or businesses have a rodent control problem, it is time to call in a professional rodent exterminator. This is especially important for those who live in Southern California where rodent control issues can turn into a nightmares if left unchecked.

Southern California, including Los Angeles and Orange County, are not the only areas in the US that can suffer from rodent control problems. Any area that has mild, mostly dry weather for extended periods of time can see an increase in rodent numbers in any given year. Rats and mice are happy to remain active year round as long as they have food and shelter. And while they are active, they are also breeding. This is how a single property, be it a residence or a commercial building, can become overrun with rodents in a very short period of time.

Many property owners feel that they can be their own rodent exterminator. This is often true if the rodent problem is small and limited to a small area. However, many property owners simply will not know the true extent of the infestation. Rats and mice love to build their nests inside walls, attics, and cellars, making it difficult for the average property owner to know for sure just how many pests are in the structure. Just because the property owner sees only one mouse or rat does not mean that there are not a dozen more hiding somewhere within the building.

It should be noted that effective rodent control is the only way to protect the property and its contents from damage. Mice and rats are known to be some of the most dangerous pests that live within structures. They can gnaw into electrical wiring, causing fires which can destroy a property in time at all. Some studies have estimated that as many as 50,000 fires per year are started because rodents gnawed into electrical wiring. Add to this the possible injury to people who might be in the building at the time of fire and you can see why hiring a rodent exterminator is so important in terms of property security and human safety.

It is also known that effective rodent control measures can eliminate food contamination caused by rats and mice. These animals feed on whatever they can gain entry to and that includes many of the food stuffs that are found in the average home or business lunch room. They are well equipped to gnaw into packages, boxes and cartons and will eagerly devour whatever they find there. In return, they leave their droppings and urine which no one wants to be exposed to much less consume by accident. When proper rodent control measures are taken, these issues become a thing of the past.

If you would like to learn more on how to select a professional rodent exterminator or wish to learn more about rodent control in general, visit the site. In-depth information is available and access to the site is free.

The Rebirth of Near-Dead Devices, and a Few Words with Josh ...

213926774 d48ea850e8 n 300x228 The Rebirth of Near Dead Devices, and a Few Words with Josh GondelmanI?m not writing this blog post on the wall of a cave or with a fountain pen or on a typewriter. It?s not being printed on a Gutenberg or Koenig printing press. And you?re not reading this in the afternoon edition of your town newspaper or on a first generation billboard style website.

That must mean, like products, communication devices have a lifecycle. Modifying the product lifecycle (launch ? growth ? maturity ?decline), let?s agree the communication devices version looks like this: use by early adopters ? widespread use ? use by old people who refuse to embrace new technology ? use as an artifact in a museum.

Now let?s put a couple of historical items through the model.

The Shofar. Somebody grabbed the horn off a (hopefully already dead) ram, thought to blow into it, which caused some people to pay attention, and it quickly evolved to announcing holidays. Over the years they started to use it to signify the start of a war, maybe call a town meeting, and it became an instrument in orchestras. Then it hit the decline, and of course today they are pretty much relegated to museums and a feature spot in the Rosh Hashana service.

The Typewriter. Invented, got popular, got really popular, started to decline, was used by people that thought the computer was a passing fad, now they are in museums and used by writers that think they are too cool for computers.

There are also more modern communication vehicles, like fax machines, beepers, and an AOL email address, that we all know are tomorrow?s featured exhibits.

But what I find most interesting in my made up lifecycle, is one phase of the only used by old stubborn people stage. At some point during this stage the communication device becomes retro-cool, nostalgic, and spurs ?projects?.

For example, the handwritten letter. Most people don?t hand write letters anymore. Who has the time? Or the patience? Or the penmanship? There are plenty of blog posts and articles that talk about handwritten letters. They wax nostalgic about it as a lost art form, like this excerpt from a New York Times op-ed piece last February, ?A good handwritten letter is a creative act, and not just because it is a visual and tactile pleasure. It is a deliberate act of exposure, a form of vulnerability, because handwriting opens a window on the soul in a way that cyber communication can never do.? Powerful? Over the top? Right on? I don?t know.

But beyond the nostalgia comes the projects. And I?ve found a couple.

One was called snailmailmyemail.org. According to the website, ?the project allowed people to email a letter, which was then handwritten by volunteers ? complete with customizable options like a doodle, flower petal or lipstick kiss if desired ? and mailed to the recipient, completely free of charge.? Completed during a month last summer, the project sent over 10,000 letters to more than 70 different countries. But, I don?t know if there is a Jewish connection, so let?s move on to the next one.

The other project I came across is from a New York Jewish comic.

He decided to fill up some of his free time while on the road writing letters or postcards to anyone in the world who emailed him and asked for one. His name is Josh Gondelman, his tumblr page is allthebestjosh.tumblr.com, and he was nice enough to tell me more about his project.

ME: First off, I need a Jewish angle for this post. Josh, what?s the Jewish angle of your project?

JOSH: To me, the most beautiful element of Judaism is the idea of community. I started the project right after Passover [this year], and it?s really wonderful to think about holding ourselves to the standard of: ?Let all who are without food join our seder.? I?m paraphrasing, but I like the idea of doing something for someone for the specific purpose of building community. That?s one of the great responsibilities of being human, I think, to create that atmosphere of warmth and sharing.

Judaism does a very nice job of foregrounding that as a priority. It?s more about tradition and togetherness than dogma. I like the idea of tzedakah and person on person contact bringing people comfort and making a tangible difference. I think that?s kind of what this project is turning into. Not that I?m doing a great act of charity (I?m definitely, definitely not), but that people can be there for each other. I think that?s a very Jewish idea. Like whitefish salad at a funeral.

ME: Well said, now can you say something eloquent and compelling about the power of the hand-written word?

JOSH: I?ll do my best! I think that because most practical communication takes place electronically, handwritten correspondence is the domain of emotional truth rather than transmission of facts. There?s no reason to write a letter unless you want to create a concrete representation of a feeling or an idea. It takes too much time and money and energy and planning to use the mail for concerns like: ?Where should we eat dinner on Friday?? There?s a luxury and a romantic ideal to writing a letter that other mediums don?t capture quite as well, at least for people of a generation who grew up in part or in whole before e-mail and cell phones.

ME: I?ve been trying to think of anything left in this decade that is still hand-written. So far my entire list consists of the Torah and the two personal checks I write out per year, which may expose my lack of a romantic ideal. Is your hand-writing project more like the Torah or a personal check?

JOSH: It?s somewhere between personal check and doctor?s prescription pad. I don?t want to sully the beautiful calligraphy of the Torah by comparing it to my own scrawl, which I would categorize as the chicken scratch of a rooster who studied creative writing at Brandeis. The only other thing I write by hand is material for standup. I don?t type that, for whatever reason.

ME: Speaking of your standup, have you done any shows in Minneapolis?

JOSH: I love performing in Minneapolis! There are so many great comedians to work with and venues to perform at! I?m coming back to the area in September to perform at the House of Comedy (in the Mall of America).

ME: Cool. Later this summer let us know the dates and we?ll pass them on to the TC Jewfolk community, maybe give away a few tickets.

China Is Set To Launch Gaming Console -- Will Set You Back $600

China is working on a console of its own. The console was once known as the eBox, and then the iSec, but now its name is CT 510. The Chinese government has banned all video game consoles. Despite the current console market, or lack there of, Beijing Eedoo Technology Ltd., the CT 510's developers, have announced the console will be released in China on April 29, 2012.

Don't expect this console to be as popular as Xbox 360s and PS3s are here though. The CT 510 will cost 3,799 yuan, or approximately $600.

The CT 510 will launch with eight pre-installed games. It also boasts the title of the second entertainment console to be controller-free, with Kinect-like features.

It's not clear how this console is getting around China's ban of gaming consoles. We're not sure if they found a loophole, or if the laws are changing. If they are in fact changing, it could mean Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo could, in theory, release their console there too. I have a pretty wild imagination so I'm picturing this console being like the TV in 1984, always watching, always recording data.

Growing like gangbusters, Turkey says Western economies need 'serious reforms'

Turkey's Deputy Prime Minister Ali Babacan warned Friday that the US and Europe were not doing enough to resolve the core causes of the global economic slowdown.

The global economy remains deep in crisis and Europe and the United States are doing little to resolve its core causes, Deputy Turkish Prime Minister Ali Babacan warned Friday.

Mr. Babacan, a former foreign minister and Turkey?s point-man for economic policy, said neither the US nor the eurozone countries have yet to deal with the underlying causes of the global economic slowdown: a weak financial sector, weak corporate balance sheets, risky public financial positions.?

Speaking at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, Babacan warned that this year will be a year of reckoning for the European Union, and he pointed to the recent collapse of the Dutch government over the budget austerity measures as a harbinger for Europe?s coming fiscal battles.?

?2012 will be test year for European countries,? he said. ?2013 will be test year for American economy. After the elections [the new administration] will find very difficult decisions on the table right away. There has to be serious fiscal adjustment and a medium term plan to deal with the deficit. So far, there is no credible plan to deal with deficit.?

Babacan said developed countries need to undertake serious structural changes including reforming social security and labor markets: ?It is absolutely necessary for serious reforms, especially in many European countries, absolutely necessary and urgent.?

Babacan is a founding member of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan?s Justice and Development Party and considered a leading member of the ?Neo-Ottomanism? movement, moving Turkey?s foreign policy away from a predominantly Western focus to integration and activism in its immediate neighborhood ??the territories of the former Ottoman Empire.

Babacan contrasted the Western economic turmoil, with Turkey?s booming economy which he said grew at 9.2 percent growth rate in 2010, and 8.5 percent in 2011.

?We entered this crisis with a strong banking system and strong public financial structure. During the crisis when many countries were asking for fiscal stimulus programs.? We followed a very different route. We did just the opposite. We announced fiscal consolidation program. And we overperformed,? he said.

He said Turkey?s economy was far more open than many European countries, which had made Turkish companies more dynamic and more competitive in global markets. And he argued that Turkish growth was more sustainable because he said it didn?t come on the back of government spending, but rather private sector growth.

In the coming years, he said, ?We will have lower growth ??though better than everywhere else in Europe ??but slower than before. Growth is high, but it?s also sustainable growth.?

?Tight fiscal policies will continue, in good days or in bad days,? he said, ?but we don?t believe in economic growth through public spending.?

Islam, democracy, and capitalism

Turkey has shown how Islam and democracy and capitalism can cooexist peacefully, Babacan said.?

?When people observe a functioning example, people are more encouraged to ask for more in their own countries,? he said. ?We have been talking with leaders: Change is coming, you can no longer have a closed regime with an open society ??satellites, social media, the Internet ??you have this kind, this kind of society moving forward and you are running this closed regime, this is not sustainable, this cannot continue.?

?We have advised these leaders to lead this change, or you will be pushed by change anyway,? he said. ?

Babacan addressed several of the long-running disputes in the region, such as the Israeli-Palestinian impasse, the status of the split island of Cyprus, and the violence in neighboring Syria. He said Turkey was strongly supportive of the six-point peace plan pushed by former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan, but he said Turkey was strongly against any sort of military intervention or sending weapons to the embattled Syrian opposition forces.

He also said the Syrian opposition is coalescing into a viable alternative to the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

?We need to see visible, verifiable, and indisputable change in the country,? he said. ?The primary responsibility to end the violence will rest with the Syrian regime.?

Drug-overdose antidote is put in addicts' hands

WEST BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (AP) ? Steve Wohlen lay on his front lawn, blue, unconscious and barely breathing, overdosing on heroin.

His mother ran outside, frantically assembling a pen-like canister. Her heart pounding, she dropped to her knees and used the device to deliver two squirts up her son's nostrils.

Within minutes, his eyes opened, color returned to his face, and he sat up ? brought back from a potentially lethal overdose by a drug commonly known by its old brand name, Narcan.

The drug, widely sold under its generic name, naloxone, counteracts the effects of heroin, OxyContin and other powerful painkillers and has been routinely used by ambulance crews and emergency rooms in the U.S. for decades. But in the past few years, public health officials across the nation have been distributing it free to addicts and their loved ones, as well as to some police and firefighters.

Such giveaways may have saved more than 10,000 lives since the first program was started in 1996 in Chicago, according to a survey by the Harm Reduction Coalition, a national group that works to reduce the consequences of drug use.

Opponents say that making the antidote so easily available is an accommodation to drug use that could make addicts less likely to seek treatment. The objections are not unlike those raised decades ago when addicts were first issued clean needles to curb the spread of AIDS. But Wohlen and his mother see things differently.

"I just didn't want to be that mother standing next to that casket," Linda Wohlen said.

Supporters of the distribution programs say getting naloxone into drug users' homes saves lives that might otherwise be lost waiting for an ambulance.

"The question has always been: How can we get people treated before they die? If an overdose of the drug is taken at home, you won't have enough time to get that patient to the emergency room before respiratory depression leads to death," said Dr. Russell Portenoy, chairman of pain medicine at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York.

The problem has become more urgent: Heroin overdose deaths in the U.S. nearly doubled over the last decade, from 1,725 in 1999 to 3,278 in 2009, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. During the same period, deadly overdoses from opiate-like drugs, including painkillers, have nearly quadrupled, from 4,030 to 15,597.

Naloxone works by blocking certain drug receptors in the brain. It has no effect on alcohol or cocaine overdoses but can be used against such painkillers as OxyContin, Percocet and Vicodin.

Normally available only by prescription, it is issued to people like Linda Wohlen through 50 programs in more than 188 locations around the country, including Baltimore, New York and San Francisco, according to the survey, published in February by the CDC. Thousands of people have been trained to use injectable and nasal spray forms of the drug.

Other countries are also distributing the drug to the public, including Britain, Ukraine, Russia and Kazakhstan.

Most of the U.S. programs are run by state or local health departments and addiction support groups.

"If you've ever talked to a parent who watched their kid overdose, you wouldn't wonder why we are doing this," said Hilary Jacobs, deputy director of the Bureau of Substance Abuse Services in Massachusetts, where state officials began a distribution program in 2007 that they say has saved about 1,300 lives. The state has spent about $841,000 issuing free naloxone, each dose costing the Public Health Department $16.

In New Mexico, which has one of the highest drug overdose death rates in the country, health officials estimate the statewide naloxone distribution program that began in 2001 has counteracted 3,000 overdoses.

In Wilkes County, N.C., an Appalachian area with an alarmingly high rate of prescription drug deaths, a nonprofit organization called Project Lazarus has taken a slightly different approach: It persuaded doctors to prescribe naloxone in tandem with painkillers to certain patients. The practice, along with an all-out education campaign, has been credited by the organization with reducing overdose deaths 69 percent between 2009 and 2011.

Fred Wells Brason II, chief executive of Project Lazarus, said he had never heard of naloxone when the group began to develop its overdose prevention plan.

"Then I found out it was used in emergency rooms to reverse opiate overdoses," he recalled. "My first question was, 'Well, that's great, but not one person from Wilkes County who overdoses made it that far. They were all found at home dead.'"

William Breault, a neighborhood activist in Worcester, Mass., opposed the distribution site set up in his city.

"I just feel that the focus and our dollars should be getting people off drugs, into recovery and treatment," he said. "This policy is one of accommodation to anti-social behavior. Absolutely, it sends a false message that this is the silver bullet, this will take care of you if you overdose."

Police in Quincy, Mass., began carrying naloxone in late 2010, courtesy of the state, after grappling with one of the highest non-fatal overdose rates in Massachusetts. Since then, officers have used it to reverse 69 overdoses.

Patrolman Michael Brandolini said he once saved two people in a single day: a man whose mother found him unconscious in his bedroom, and a man lying in a snowbank.

"I think it's fine in the hands of first responders ? police, fire and paramedics," Brandolini said. "Personally, I have reservations about giving it to the addicts themselves. I think it may give them a false sense of security."

He said he worries addicts will think they can administer naloxone to themselves, when it is almost always given by someone else ? a friend or loved one ? because the drug user loses consciousness.

The Food and Drug Administration, together with the National Institute on Drug Abuse and the CDC, held a workshop earlier this month to gather public opinion on making naloxone more widely available.

Among those testifying were advocates for distribution programs, those who believe the antidote should be made available over the counter, and those opposed to its use by anyone but doctors and emergency workers.

In Massachusetts, Wohlen said he was angry rather than grateful when he woke up that night two years ago, his high suddenly gone, replaced by withdrawal symptoms that he described as feeling like a terrible case of the flu.

Wohlen was out on bail for robbing a fast-food restaurant when he overdosed, and was sent back to prison because of his drug use. Now serving five to seven years behind bars in Massachusetts, the 28-year-old said in a recent prison interview that he is clean and has signed up for a prison training program to learn the heating and ventilation trade.

He said the naloxone that his mother used made it possible: "I might be dead if she hadn't done it."

Pujols gets hit, but Angels fall again

Associated Press Sports

updated 4:57 p.m. ET April 26, 2012

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - The Tampa Bay Rays added Brandon Allen to provide power off the bench, and he quickly delivered.

Allen pinch hit in the ninth inning Thursday, and his two-run homer lifted the Rays over the Los Angeles Angels 4-3.

"Success like this isn't going to come all the time," Allen said. "Baseball is a lot of luck. I was just there hitting and stayed within myself."

Allen, acquired April 19 off waivers from Oakland, homered off Jordan Walden (0-1) after B.J. Upton's one-out single. Allen drew a bases-loaded walk off the bench in Wednesday night's 3-2 win over Los Angeles in his first Tampa Bay plate appearance.

"To his credit, he has not played in a while," Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon said. "This guy has not had many swings over the last couple weeks, and that speaks a lot to his makeup that we've heard about."

Brandon Gomes (1-0) worked a 1-2-3 ninth, helping the Rays win their fifth straight.

"Those guys over there are going to make you earn every inch," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said of the Rays.

Albert Pujols went 1 for 4, ending his hitless streak at a career-worst 21 at-bats when he rolled a grounder up the middle to beat a three-man defensive shift. Pujols was thrown out attempting to stretch the single into a double.

With 445 home runs, Pujols has not gone deep in 19 games and 76 at-bats this season. He's homerless in 105 regular-season at-bats since Sept. 22, tying his longest drought: April 23-May 23 last year. The three-time NL MVP is hitting .224 with a .280 on-base percentage after leaving St. Louis to sign a $240 million, 10-year contract with the Angels.

Allen hit .200 with six homers and 18 RBIs in 52 games last season with Oakland and Arizona. It was his first homer since Aug. 27 off Boston's Jon Lester.

"He came up with a big swing on a guy throwing 97 (mph)," the Angels' Torii Hunter said.

Jerome Williams pitched seven solid innings and Mark Trumbo homered and had two RBIs for the Angels, who have lost seven of nine.

"When it rains, it pours," Hunter said. "Right now it's pouring down."

Williams allowed two runs and five hits. Trumbo hit his third homer this season in the fifth, and added an RBI double one inning later.

Ben Zobrist and Matt Joyce drove in the other Rays' runs. Matt Moore gave up three runs and five hits in 5 2-3 innings.

The Angels had just one runner - on Vernon Wells' second-inning walk - through four against Moore. Trumbo opened the fifth with a homer that tied it at 1.

After Trumbo's two-out, run-scoring double, he scored on Wells' infield single for a 3-1 lead in the sixth.

Tampa Bay closed to 3-2 when Joyce triple in a run in the sixth.

Desmond Jennings had a leadoff single in the first and scored for a 1-0 lead when Zobrist doubled. Jennings has a career-best eight-game hitting streak.

"Hard-fought game, one bad pitch," Walden said.

Notes: Allen got the home-run ball back and will give it to his mother. ... This was just Walden's second save opportunity this season. ...
