The word cancer often strikes fear, fear of falling ill, fear of repeated hospitalizations and fear of death, much of these fears comes because of the fear off unknown. Cancer refers to uncontrolled uninhibited growth of cells which continue to divide at a prolific rate and hereby invading surrounding tissues called metastasis. When the cancer occurs in melanocytes- pigment present in skin it leads to complication called skin cancer or melanoma. It may begin as a mole in the skin but isn?t always restricted and can spread to other pigmented tissues, such as in the eye or in the intestines.

Guideline # 1:

Most moles remain as moles which develop right from childhood and most are harmless and are used as birthmarks.

Moles that change over the course of time may be cancerous but isn?t always obligatory, measurement is through ABCD, A- Asymmetry, B- Border irregularities, C-Color, D-Diameter.

The more pronounced the frequency of change lesser is the chances of cancer.
WHAT ARE THE COMMON TYPES OF CANCER?
Types of melanoma Characterization :-
- Superficial Spreading Melanoma?accounts for about 70% of all cases of melanoma. The most common locations are the legs of women and the backs .These melanomas are often barely raised and have a variety of colors of men.
- Nodular melanoma 20% of melanomas begin as deeper, blue-black to purplish lumps. They may evolve faster and may also be more likely to spread.
- Lentigo maligna Occur on places like the face, which are exposed to the sun constantly rather than intermittently. Lentigo maligna looks like a large, irregularly shaped or colored freckle and develops slowly.
- Acral lentiginous melanoma It occurs on non hair-bearing surfaces of the body such as on the palms, soles, under the nails and in the oral mucosa.
- Soft-tissue melanoma Occurs in the soft parts such as kidney cells or pancreas or other soft tissues, characterized by solid nests and fascicles of tumor cells with clear cytoplasm and prominent nucleoli.
- Desmoplastic melanoma usually occurs in the head and neck region of older people with sun-damaged skin.
- Amelanotic melanoma Skin cancer in which the cells do not make melanin.Appearance can be pink,red,purple or of normal skin color.
